I had an light bulb moment today. Just because I can eat something does NOT mean I should. It seems like a no-brainer and it is. But this week I was eating quite a few unhealthy foods I probably shouldn’t have. Foods like pizza, chicken salad sub (too much mayo but darn was it delicious), and Tofutti (dairy free “ice cream”).
It’s pretty easy for me to keep from eating unhealthy foods because so many of them contain dairy. When I do find a food without dairy, I usually get very excited. I get so excited that I’m ABLE to eat it I forget to think about whether or not I SHOULD eat it. This is especially true for the Tofutti “ice cream”. I have to remind myself it is still ice cream, even if it doesn’t have milk in it. I can still eat it every once in a while as a treat but not two or three times a week. If I want “ice cream” that badly, I should make myself some yonanas (bananas and other fruit with the same texture as soft-serve ice cream).
I will be paying more attention to whether or not what I am about to eat is healthy or unhealthy. I will try harder to choose healthy over unhealthy regardless of the dairy content. This week will be much better than next week. 🙂
Hubby and I had errands to run today. Since the weather is getting nice in our area, we went to Walmart for lawn care equipment. After we checked out, Hubby said he wanted a pretzel from Auntie Anne’s. I don’t know if you’ve ever tasted the crunchy, salty goodness of Auntie Anne’s but I love their pretzels. I had eaten really good for the past few days so I didn’t see the harm in one pretzel. We get to the counter and I ask the man standing there if the pretzels contain any dairy. He pulls out a chart, shows me that no, original pretzels don’t contain any dairy. I happily order a pretzel for my husband and myself. After we pay for the pretzels, the guy asks me if I have a milk allergy or if I just chose not to eat it. I tell him I have an allergy. Then he tells me they put butter on the pretzels. Seriously!!! He lets me buy them BEFORE he tells me they have butter. As we walked to the car, I was having a mental battle going on in my head of whether or not to eat the pretzel.
“It’s only a little butter”
“Butter is dairy. You can’t have dairy”
“But its an Auntie Anne’s pretzel!!!!”
“You shouldn’t get the pretzel in the first place so NO you may not eat it”
It went back and forth for a while but I was starting to resist the temptation. Then we got into the car. My goodness, it smelled so good in the car. By this point, I had decided I wouldn’t eat the pretzel but it was so hard to sit in the car smelling them, listening to my husband eat both of them, and watching him dip them in yummy caramel. I had to look out the window, put my window down and breathe through my mouth.
I didn’t give in! I resisted the overwhelming temptation and I didn’t give in! I’m so proud of myself!
Every week I plan on posting an update about my progress towards better health. I will post goals I want to accomplish in the upcoming week, if I accomplished the goals I set the previous week, current weight, if I lose or gain weight (hopefully only lose weight), and a brief summary of my activities.

Goals for the upcoming week
- Walk at least 8 miles
- Perform at least one strength training workout
- Continue to eat dairy free
- Add one serving of veggies or fruit each day by either eating extra veggies/fruit or replacing a snack with veggies

Lose/Gain: Lost 4 pounds!!!!!
This past week has been my first dairy free week I’ve ever had. Surprisingly, it was not as hard as I thought it would be. I can’t believe how much food has dairy in it. Its rather daunting, but I try to look for the positive in life. Dairy free is turning out to be helpful because it keeps me from eating junk food like cookies, chocolate, and all sorts of other unhealthy food. Most of the food I want to eat containing dairy isn’t healthy for me anyway, including frozen dinners and most processed foods. Therefore, I have been making my meals from scratch (which I enjoy doing anyway) so I know what I am eating. This allows me to add more veggies my meals.
As far as fitness goes, I have been walking every chance I can get this week. The weather has been warm and wonderful. I’ve taken my daughter on walks almost every day this week. I’ve walked a little over 5 miles. I’m quite proud of myself 🙂
